I celebrated our 41st wedding anniversary in the pub tonight – without Jane. She was at choir practice, which she seldom misses. Truth to tell, we’ve never gone a bundle on celebrating our anniversaries – at heart we’re not really party animals. On our 25th we went to Paris for a long weekend – our first time there – but that was the exception that proves the rule.
A lot of our friends are celebrating anniversaries at this time, and the reason is quite prosaic. In the olden days you got income tax relief for the whole year as a married couple if you married before 5th April – the end of the tax year. For the record, I was 23 and Jane was 21 when we married – young by today’s standards. And I had £10 in my wallet at the time. It’s a good job the beer was cheaper then.
